Michael Owen believes that Liverpool will have too much quality for Burnley when the two sides meet on Sunday.
The Reds lie one point behind Manchester City in the Premier League title race, and could leapfrog the Blues with a win over Sean Dyche’s side.
Speaking to BetVictor, the former Reds man said: “Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 35 home PL games although they have only won four of their nine league games in 2019.
“The Reds defence – marshalled by the brilliant Virgil van Dijk – have only conceded 15 goals in their 29 PL games so far this season, but this is the first time that Mo Salah has failed to score in three successive PL games for the club.
“It is only a matter of time, however, before the Egyptian rediscovers his scoring touch and I expect Jurgen Klopp’s side to gain another three vital home points in this High Noon shoot-out.”
OPINION
It’s no real shock for Owen to back Liverpool in this one. For all Burnley have found some decent form in recent times, they are still a long way off the level of consistency and solidity that you would expect them to need to challenge the Reds. After a thumping win over Watford last week, the Reds stumbled a little with a draw against Everton, but any talk of them bottling the title race is melodramatic and they really should coast home in this one. Goodison Park on Sunday was an absolute cauldron of pressure, and while they didn’t win, they did do enough to take all three points on another day. Back at Anfield this weekend, with a little less hostility and some decent belief, you would be surprised if they didn’t dominate this one from the outset. They need to do exactly that if they are to send out a message to their title rivals.
