Liverpool believe goalkeeper Simon Mignolet will accept his role as back-up to Alisson Becker despite him still trying to pursue an exit from the club, according to The Telegraph.
The national newspaper claim that the Reds are highly unlikely to part with the Belgian shot-stopper before the European transfer window ends after promoting him to second-choice keeper following Loris Karius’ switch to Besiktas.
The Telegraph report that the Reds think Mignolet will come to terms with his role in the short-term ahead of his situation being reviewed in January even though the goalkeeper wants first-team football.
The 30-year-old shot-stopper recently publicly criticised the Reds’ decision not to loan him out as of yet following Karius sealing his exit from Anfield.
“That Karius transfer does not change anything for me,” stated Mignolet, as quoted by The Telegraph.
“I have always been clear: I want to play. No 2 or No 3 makes little difference, nothing has been told to me after the departure of Loris. So I do not know how my future at Liverpool is. We will see what happens this week.
“I find it bizarre that Karius is loaned, while I also had options to be loaned. But for some reason that was not possible. A goalkeeper who got the preference on me last year may leave on a rental basis. Strange.”
OPINION
Mignolet’s outburst about his situation doesn’t exactly scream that he is about to calmly take his place on the Reds’ bench and slap a smile on his face anytime soon. The shot-stopper, who earns £60,000-a-week at Anfield (Source: Spotrac), is right to be frustrated as for the majority of the summer it was as if his bags were already packed and he knew he’d be granted an exit to ensure that he got to regular play football this season. However after parting company with Karius, it seems Klopp isn’t ready to approve of Mignolet’s exit any longer as Alisson may end up being ruled out through injury and that would just leave the Reds’ manager with inexperienced options to choose from. The Telegraph report that the Reds snubbed Besiktas when they asked about taking Mignolet on loan and that no doubt infuriated the keeper more. While the Reds believe Mignolet will soon accept his role at the club, their confidence may be misplaced.
