It looks as though the writing is on the wall for Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita after he sustained an injury in the Champions League encounter with Napoli on Wednesday night.
Keita was taken off after just 20 minutes to be replaced by Jordan Henderson after he landed awkwardly – and according to Sky Sports, he now looks to be major doubt for the crunch clash with Manchester City this Sunday.
It will be the first time that the two genuine contenders for the Premier League title have met this season, so the stakes will undoubtedly be very high for both sides.
However, Jurgen Klopp has now been handed a major blow, as Keita has been one of his most influential players so far in this campaign.
Since arriving from RB Leipzig earlier this summer, Keita has been somewhat of a sensation, thoroughly impressing upon his league debut against West Ham United in the first game of the season.
After that match he received praise left, right and centre – so the fact that he is unlikely to feature against City is obviously quite the setback for the Reds.
The £120,000-a-week [Spotrac] ace has been a rock in the centre of Liverpool’s midfield and he has taken control of this area in most of the matches he has starred in.
City’s midfield are notorious for being one of the best in the league, so Klopp would obviously be wanting to match them toe-for-toe in this fixture.
That may now not be the case, and it means that their opponents have that slight edge over them in this match – which is the last thing that Klopp would have wanted, but it is a prospect that could leave City elated.
Nevertheless, if Liverpool are one of the genuine competitors for the title, they will have to show that they are able to cope with this likely setback when they face the current champions.
